Supervison of Young People at Co-curricular Events

TO:    Parent/Guardian of McFarland School District Students

RE:    Parental Supervision of Young People at Co-Curricular Events

Date:  Thursday, September 27, 2007

This Friday, September 28th, is the homecoming football game.  We are sending this memo to our district family to remind everyone of the importance of supervising your children at all school co-curricular events.

On our annual school calendar you may notice the focus on promoting the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets.  The assets serve as building blocks for healthy development so our youth grow up as healthy, caring and responsible members of the McFarland community.  Community activities, such as school co-curricular events, can provide a wonderful opportunity for families and community members to interact in a positive manner.

To that end we want to encourage parents of our elementary, intermediate and middle school students to escort and be responsible for their children during our home athletic events.  We would ask that you not drop off your children at an event without parental supervision.  While the school district does provide supervision, it is not meant to replace the parents’ role and responsibility in escorting and monitoring elementary and intermediate children’s behavior during school co-curricular events.

The opportunity for young people to be involved in risky behaviors by being “dropped off at the game” is real.  Such risky activities might include, but not be limited to, leaving the event when mom and dad think they are at the event, hanging out in the woods adjacent to IMMS, rough-housing at the game or IMMS playground/school grounds, running around wildly underneath the bleachers and in the stadium, and/or experimenting with drugs or alcohol.  Furthermore, in the event of an emergency, it is critical that parents be present.

Parents and Guardians - please help provide supervision of your pre-high school child(ren) at McFarland High School events. In order to ensure the safety of your child and the enjoyment of all, you should attend the event with them or make sure they are attending the event with a responsible adult. This is necessary for admission to the event. Children (not accompanied by an adult) that leave the event may not be allowed back into the event. Loitering and rough-housing outside of the event location will not be allowed.

Thanks for helping us make these events safe and fun for all.  Go Spartans!

Sincerely,
