Wisconsin's inter-district public school open enrollment program allows parents to apply for their children to attend school districts other than the one in which they live. Wisconsin residents in grades 4K through twelfth may apply to participate in open enrollment. There is no tuition cost to parents for their children's participation in open enrollment. Parents may be charged the same fees as resident students (for example: book and extra-curricular activity fees).

Application Process

Parents must submit application forms online or to the nonresident school district between February 2nd - April 30th, 2026 (for the 2026-2027 school year). All applications MUST BE submitted by 4 PM on April 30, 2026. In 2011, Wisconsin Act 114 (Senate Bill 2) was enacted by the state legislature and signed into law by the governor. It provides certain exceptions for those who are outside the application period. Please visit the DPI Open Enrollment Alternative Application webpage for information on enrollment period exceptions.

Those wishing to apply for open enrollment into the McFarland School District may do so online through the Department of Public Instruction website.

Projected Enrollment

For 2026-2027, the following grades do have open enrollment availability:  4K (27 spots), K (11 spots), 2nd (17 spots), 3rd (24 spots), 4th (4 spots), 5th (19 spots) and 10th (9 spots).  Therefore, the district will create waitlists for these grades and a lottery system will be used to fill the spots.  Enrollment is projected to be over capacity at grades 1, 6-8, 9, and 11-12 at McFarland Primary School (MPS), Indian Mound Middle School (IMMS) and McFarland High School (MHS).   For these grades (1, 6-8, 9 & 11-12), there will NOT be waitlists created due to unavailable space. Space is available in all grades at WIVA (virtual school 4K-12th).

Projected Enrollment for 2026-2027

*2026-2027 there is no space available at WIS, IMMS and MHS (including MHS 18-21) for Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Vision Services, Orientation and Mobility Services, Audiology, Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services, Psychological Services, Counseling or Specially Designed Physical Education.

There is no space available at 4K or MPS for Speech and Language, Physical Therapy, Vision Services, Orientation and Mobility Services, Audiology, Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services, Psychological Services or Counseling.
