In 2019, Troop #2683 was made up of Cassidy Miller, Brooke Clark, Savannah Shropshire, Jayde Dordel, Delaney Braun, and Sophia DeVos.
At that time, they were Girl Scout Cadettes, and together they set out to achieve the 2nd highest honor in Girl Scouts -- the Silver Award.
What is the Girl Scout Silver Award?

A collaborative or individual project to address and improve an issue in your local community. “Earning the award puts you among an exceptional group of girls who have used their knowledge and leadership skills to make a difference in the world.”

What Was our Troop’s Take Action Project?
Troop #2683 chose to work on some enhancements to the McFarland School Forest:
1. Building Bird Boxes

a. Get permission for being able to put up Bird Boxes and Owl Boxes in the IMMS School Forest
b. Get design plans for House Wren, Screech Owl, and Bluebird boxes.
c. Create a budget, source building materials, cut wood and screens to fit boxes
d. Build boxes with the troop
e. Identify good locations to place the boxes in the Indian Mound forest and install them
f. Show the boxes at the McFarland Bird Festival
g. Make a cleaning plan for the bird boxes and a identify someone to maintain them
2. Building Bird Feeder Stations

a. Establishing a budget and fundraising for donations and project materials
b. Constructing bird feeders
c. Purchasing bird food
d. Placing bird feeders behind IMMS
e. Creating a maintenance plan for refilling and cleaning the feeders.
f. Partnering with the IMMS Student Council to educate them on how to keep up the feeders.
3. Putting Educational Signs with QR Codes in the forest (links to website pages to explain the history, habitats, plants and animals)

a. Developing the concept
b. Researching and writing content for the website
c. Raising money for project materials
d. Partnering with village and school district officials to gain permissions and assistance
e. Installing the posts and signs, and collaborating with key experts to insure the accuracy and professionalism of the overall project
