Please review the following details about weather decisions and communication.
Communication
We will make a decision about closing school for inclement weather as soon as possible with a goal of making the decision before 6:00 a.m. School closings will be announced via Infinite Campus messages to families, posted on the District’s website, and shared on local television stations.
Your Contact Information
Keep your family and emergency contact information up-to-date in Infinite Campus so you receive the messages. Please see this document for directions on how to review and update your contact preferences (phone, email).
Snow and Ice
For snow and/or ice events, we work closely with our bus company as we assess road reports and review the predicted weather patterns including timing of the snow/ice, how much snow/ice is predicted, and how it will impact getting students to and from school.
Extreme Cold Warning (formerly known as wind chill warnings)
As directed by School Board policy, schools will be closed if the National Weather Service issues an extreme cold warning (wind chill or temperature of -30) for our area for the time just before the school day begins. During an Extreme Cold Watch, school will continue as scheduled.
Delayed Start/Early Release
In an effort to keep students in school as much as possible, the District may use a two hour delay to the start time of the school day when conditions are poor early in the day, but are expected to improve quickly. These are situations where we would have typically canceled school for the entire day in the past. If a two hour delay is used, the start time for each building will be: MPS-9:45, WIS-9:55, IMMS-10:20, MHS-10:20. The District is unlikely to use an early release process unless there are unusual circumstances.
Virtual School Days
Snow and ice days will be considered “traditional snow days” and will not include virtual instruction. If school closings have expected long durations due to weather, or facility issues such as power loss or water main break issues, the school district may move to virtual instruction.
As always, if there is ever a time that we decide to open school and you do not feel it is in the best interest of your child to attend or remain at school based on your assessment of the weather - we will excuse those absences. Please communicate with the school office if you make this decision as a parent/guardian.
Thank you for reviewing these reminders to ensure you and your family are prepared if school is canceled.
